Convict Ship Surgeon-Superintendent




Thomas Hunter was employed as Surgeon Superintendent on the female convict ship Competitor to New South Wales in 1828.

He kept a Medical Journal dated 27 May 1828 to 20 October 1828.

There may have been more than one surgeon by the name of Thomas Hunter in the Royal Navy at this time. The front of the Journal of the Competitor refers to the surgeon as 'Thomas Hunter (a)'.

Thomas Hunter is listed in the 1828 Census taken in November as residing with John Bigge in Sydney.
