James Kelly - Settler

James Kelly was born in the colony. He was the son of James Kelly of Lower Portland Head and his wife Mary Langan. James Kelly senior was Tried at the Old Bailey on 8th June 1792 and arrived on the Royal Admiral in October 1792. Mary Langan  arrived on the Britannia in 1797.

James Kelly and brother Richard Kelly were granted land in 1823 which James took up at the Hunter. His grant can be seen lower right on the map below next the the grant of Robert Corum Dillon.

In the Colonial Secretary's Correspondence there a Certificate of Occupation dated 2 November 1825 for James Kelly's land in the parish of Alnwick, Co. Northumberland. Their father also petitioned on behalf of his sons that an allotment of land be granted in the town of Newcastle.

James Gillers was an assigned servant at Brisbanefield in 1832

Death

The Sydney Gazette reported the death of James Kelly and his mother Mary Kelly in 1834 -

'On the 5th instant at Brisbanefield, Mrs. Mary Kelly, after a residence of 40 years in this colony, leaving a numerous family of children to deplore her loss. On the 13th instant at the same place, Mr. James Kelly, second son of the above named Mary Kelly.

Richard Kelly

In 1835..... Richard Kelly as the Heir at Law, Brother to the late Mr. James Kelly and sole administrator to his late Father's Estate, Mr. James Kelly senior, hereby cautions all persons against purchasing any of the household furniture, farming implements, or other effects lying and being at Upper Brisbanefield, from Mrs. Sarah Holmes, (his housekeeper) or from any other person under penalty of prosecution. - Sydney Morning Herald 14 September 1835
