Charles Kevern Nutt R. N.,

Convict Ship Surgeon-Superintendent

Charles Kevern Nutt was born c. 1805 at Stonehouse, Devonshire. He was appointed Surgeon in the Royal Navy in 1840.[1]

He married his first wife Mary, who was second daughter of Major Fleming R.M. of Wyndham Place at St. Andrew's Church Plymouth on 27 October 1840. [2]

Devonport 1852

In 1852 Charles Kevern Nutt surgeon of the Hotspur was appointed Surgeon to the Excellent, gunnery ship at Portsmouth but stationed at Devonport for gunnery practice at that port[3]

Surgeon Superintendent

Charles Nutt was employed as Surgeon Superintendent on one convict ship voyage to Australia - Lloyds with female convicts to Van Diemen's Land in 1845

H.M.S. Cambridge 1856

He was Surgeon on H.M.S. Cambridge in 1856 when the Chief Mate committed suicide. He later gave evidence at the inquest. [4]

1861 Census

Charles Nutt age 56, wife Sarah Nutt age 36, daughter Mary age 19, daughter Alice age 5 and daughter Ada age 1, resided at 1 Short Row, Dock Yard, Portsea, Portsmouth. Occupation Staff Surgeon, Royal Navy [5].

Short Row (1786-87), Georgian houses built for Dockyard officers and situated in the apex of the trace of the old de Gomme fortifications at what was known as Bonfire Corner. They are said to have been Thomas Telford's first design essay and were principally designed to accommodate the Surgeon, Master Ropemaker, Clerk of the Ropeyard, and the Boatswain. An addition building was added in mid 1880’s; by then the occupants were the Master Rigger, Second Constructor, Boatswain, staff Surgeon and the Fleet Surgeon. - Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust

Retirement

Charles Kevern Nutt was on the Navy List of Retired Deputy Inspectors General of Hospitals and Fleets in 1864 [6]

He is listed in the Medical Register 1865.
