Details: Assigned to George Brooks. Charged with neglect of duty....George Brooks testified....The prisoner was transferred to me some months ago by the Bench from the service of Mr. Sparke senior. Part of his duty is to attend to the milch cow, he had that business to attend to on Saturday morning last but I passed the cow and half grazing between eight and nine oclock that morning but could not see the prisoners anywhere although I looked round repeatedly for him in all directions on my return from the hospital about nine oclock. I then saw him heading to the cow. Since that day the same cow has been impounded which would not have happened if the prisoner had attended to his duty. I am told that he has excused himself for the neglect he is charged with by allegedly sickness the only thing he ever complained of to me was a sore lip which I did not consider was any hindrance to his following his usual occupation or any other nor did he speak of it with that view to me if he had told me he was unable to attend to his duty I should have considered it. Guilty. Sentenced to 50 lashes
