Details: John Greystone and John Musgrove both in service to government charged with theft.....Francis Beattie states. I was turning maize into the government stores. Greystone had charge of the maize on its being measured eight bushels were deficient. Isaac Elliott states....I was offered some maize for sale by Musgrove at 3 shillings per bushel. I suspected it to be stolen. I told him to bring it, I would buy it. He went away, I watched where he went, I saw him go to the store yard where Greystone was. I saw Greystone lift a bag on Musgroves back which was light to me. I sent to Beatties house to inform him I had some maize belonging to him. The bag held two bushels. William Turvey, constable states....I was directed to take Greystone and Musgrove into custody. I asked Musgrove where he got the maize, he said he had it from Greystone. John Greystone in his defence states, I was placed at the store to take care of the maize belonging to Mr. Beattie. I wished to speak to someone in the back street and went there. I was absent ten minutes or a quarter of an hour. The maize was in such a public place, I did not think any person would attempt to meddle with it. I did not know that any was stolen until I was accused. I dont know anything of Musgrove. I never gave him any of this maize to carry away. Mr. Elliotts evidence against me is from spite. John Musgrove states he knows nothing of the robbery. Sentenced to 50 lashes each
