              Details: The marble plaque within the John Slade Memorial Pavilion commemorates the triple champion boxer of Australia and middleweight champion of the British Empire, Dave Sands, who was accidentally killed in 1952. He used to train on this oval.  The Sandstone column approx. 1200 mm high with photograph of David Sands and inscription below. Installed by Boxing Fraternity in 1988. Dave Sands was born near Kempsey in 1926 but lived at Stockton and became an Australian Boxing champion

              Details: The ballast ground was of major importance to the development of Newcastle as a port, especially for coal. The ships would tie up to the dykes along the foreshore and unload half their ballast, then cross to the other side of the harbour to load coal, back to unload the rest of the ballast and back again for the rest of the coal. The ship would often be tied 2 or 3 abreast, and were constantly jostling for position to unload the ballast and cross the harbour for coal loading. The ballast was collected on wagons that ran on railway lines out along the dykes, and was then progressively used to fill the gaps between the dykes and so reclaim the foreshore, the original line of which was roughly along Fullerton Street. The ballast included stone from ports all around the world, some of which was used to construct the wall which forms the main foreshore line today. Ballast could also include many sort of waste products, with the most famous being rubble from the San Francisco earthquake

              Details: The first attempt to mine at Stockton was by Fisher and Donaldson in 1847. Bores were sunk in the 1860s and again in 1875. Another drilling led to the formation of the Stockton Coal Company in 1883. By 1889 four hundred men and boys were employed. In 1896 a fall underground killed eleven men while later that year several men were gassed, the mine closed in 1897

              Details: Gateposts, erected by public subscription, commemorate the miners who perished in an attempt to rescue their companions in the Stockton Colliery Disaster of 1896. They were unveiled on the 28th August 1897 by the Minister for Mines. The tablets on the posts contain a brief description of the tragedy together with the names of those who perished. On the 27th August 1897, medals were awarded by the Royal Humane Society to the surviving members of the rescue.

              Details: STOCKTON COUNCIL CHAMBERS are linked with the Tudor Period. In 1891, when the Council Chambers were erected, the aldermen decided that the building would be in keeping with the castles of the Tudor era. Architect George C. Sanders drew the plans and the building was erected under his supervision.               Details: The opening of the new works of the Sydney Soap and Candle Co., at North Waratah took place yesterday with great eclat. The large room in which the luncheon was held was divided in twain by a gay array of flags, one half the space being thrown open to the entertainment, while goods in various stages of manufacture were arranged neatly in the other half. The large room covers about an acre of ground independently of the other buildings.. The still-room is fireproof; and amongst the vats of which some are capable of holding 2300 gallons, we noticed several were made by Mr. Clough, cooper, of Newcastle . Messrs A. W. Gilles, Charles Upfold, R. R. Gilles and G. Moreton are the Newcastle part proprietors and directors; Mr. Charles Upfold manager of the Wickham Works and managing director of the company, having under his special supervision the soap department at Tighes Hill; Mr. G. P .Clarke, manager of the Stearine Factory at Tighes Hill; Mr. H. O Brien, engineer in charge of construction, under Mr. Clarke at Tighes Hill. Mr. H. Woodham analytical chemist to the company also t Tighes Hill. It is intended now to discontinue the manufacture of soap at Wickham and substitute there the making of blue, blacking and grocers sundries. The land of the company consists of 22 acres upon which numerous and well-appointed buildings fore carrying on of the business are erected as well as cottages for the married workmen and their families and barracks for t he use of the single men. The buildings were erected under the supervision of the architects Messrs Bennett and Yeomans. The land is close to the Ferndale Colliery from which a cheap supply of coal is readily available and there is plenty of good water available

              Details: New City Council power house buildings were opened this morning by Sir Denison Miller and the Mayoress Mrs. Kilgour. One cost the council 2200 pounds and the other will take 3500 pounds. Sir Denison Miller advised the council not to bother about making profits but to keep the price as low as possible so as to attract manufacture. A fairly large number of citizens gathered at the Sydney-street power station at 9.30am when the Mayor asked the Commonwealth Bank Governor to open the buildings. He explained that it had been built of brick over a widen building which had been subsequently removed. The Mayor presented Sir Denison Miller with a gold key. He expressed pleasure that the bank Governor would now have a person knowledge of work that  was going on in Newcastle. The Speaker expressed surprise at the low cost of the building. I am told the Greater Newcastle scheme later on will be to use this as a distributing centre for the power manufactured at the larger works in Zaara-street. The lighting of the city by electricity at a reasonable cost and the provision of electric power for the works of the district, is one of the main features. I look to it for the progress of this great city of yours. As long as you can provide electric power at a reasonable cost you will attract manufacturers who will make their Australian Headquarters here. I would advise as long as you can pay your way, you dont want to make a profit out of it. Let the public have the benefit by giving them cheap electricity. The policy will cause the establishment of many large works here, continued the Governor. Mrs. Kilgour then laid the foundation stone of the other building, and the Mayor, Alderman Kilgour, gave some particulars of the growth of the electrical department. Mrs. Kilgour was presented with a silver trowel

              Details: THE Seaham Colliery is situated 15 miles west of Newcastle. The plant and equipment are modern. The property consists of 4016 acres of freehold coal bearing land, out of which only 350 acres have been worked. The seam is the well-known Borehole. The mine is worked by two vertical shafts, the down cast being 450ft. deep and the upcast 470ft. deep, and employs 380 men and boys; the fortnightly pay sheets amount to between £1800 and £2000. The output of coal at the present time is 1000 tons daily. For one mile underground the main and tail rope system of haulage, together with electric signals and telephones, is installed. The coal is specially cleaned by two travelling belts each 80ft. long and 4ft. wide, and shaking screens. The coal is conveyed over the colliery s private line, a distance of 5 1/2 miles, by the company s two 60-ton locomotives to Cockle Creek, where the Government engines take charge of it and run it on to the Dyke. The company has 411 7-ton hopper waggons, which are equal to a capacity of 2877 tons, also a coal box for the stowage of small coal capable of holding 1000 tons, and with these facilities the colliery can give the best possible despatch to vessels. The mechanical ventilation of the colliery is effected by a Waddle fan 30ft. diameter, capable of producing 150,000 cubic feet of air per minute. There are also spacious offices, black smith and carpenter s shops, besides the large buildings for the storage of fodder and materials. The colliery, which is under the able management of Mr. Arch. Fairley, is kept in a highly satisfactory condition. The output, which is over 200,000 tons of large coal per annum, is used regularly by the Government railways of several of the colonies and by many of the principal intercolonial steamship companies, with whom the colliery has large con tracts, and is also extensively shipped to Manila, West Coast of South America, San Francisco, Honolulu, Singapore, Java, etc. Seaham coal, being equally good for steam, smelting, or household purposes, is of a very high quality, and specially adapted for marine and railway purposes, yielding most satisfactory practical results, both as regards economy in consumption and evaporative power. To meet the constantly-growing demand the output is being increased, and the reputation which the colliery has acquired for prompt loading is more than likely to be fully maintained. The coal also gives satisfactory results for gas purposes.

              Details: In the early 1870s during the Tin Boom in Queensland and New England, C. J. Stevens took over Scott s former works to convert it into a Tin Smelter. By October 1875, four furnaces were at work and the smelter allegedly was the largest in Australia. It closed in 1876

              Details: In July 1924 the NMH reported that good progress was being made with the erection of the parish hall, which is the memorial to the soldiers buried by Chaplain G. K. Tucker, the rector of the parish in the Trois Arbres Cemetery , France. An ordinance was passed at the last sessions of the Newcastle synod empowering the parish to borrow 5000 pounds for the construction of the hall and five shops. The plans which were prepared by Mr. L. Williams, architect, of Melbourne, provide for a two storied building of concrete . On the ground floor there are five lock up shops, and on the upper floor there will be a hall of considerable dimensions. A kindergarten will also be erected at the rear of the block
