Details: JAMES ROBINSON, Storekeeper, was born in Armagh, Ireland in 1825, and came to the colony in the ship Elizabeth on January 20th, 1844. He was an overseer on a farm of Mr. Walter Scott s for two years, a grain buyer for one and a-half years, a coalminer for five years, and in 1853 commenced business as a general grocer and spirit merchant, his license being the twenty-fourth issued in the colony. In 1860 he sold out, but entered into partnership with his brother in the shipping business, and continued for seven years very successfully. He then went into partnership for three years with Mr. Levy, of Sydney, and accompanied one of his boats for four years in the intercolonial trade. In 1870 Mr. Robinson was totally ruined by losses and shipping accidents, and at forty-five years of age had to start in life with only £4. He went to Bulli, and worked for seven years as a coal miner, then managed a farm for three years, and resumed coal mining till 1876, when he had saved £300, and prepared to start again at storekeeping, which he did in 1877 at Burwood in premises of his own. This business he conducted successfully for six and a-half years, when he sold out and retired for two years. He again went into storekeeping, but in six months sold out, and is now living privately. = Mr. Robinson is a member of the L.O.L. He was for years a contractor for carrying coal from Newcastle to Sydney for the Sydney Gaslight Company. iris career is a lesson to all; he having surmounted apparently insuperable difficulties and gai. d a comfortable competence by indefatigable energy and perseverance
