Details: Among the many memorials to the dead which may be found in the old churchyard, few will recall more interesting reminiscences than that which was erected to the memory of James Hannell the first Mayor of Newcastle. The monument which covers a vault is an imposing one and on one panel bears the following inscription - In affectionate Remembrance of James Hannell died Dec 31 1876 aged 63; also Mary his beloved wife died Dec 18 1884 aged 65. His death took place at his residence Maryville, Wickham, and on the New Years Day following the remains were interred in the Church of England cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in the city, reaching from the Newcastle East Public School to the spot where Palings now stands, and was attended by all creeds.
