First Name: -
Ship: LH
Date: 18 December 1877
Place: Tighes, Hill
Source: Newcastle Morning Herald
Details: The Ferndale Colliery forms a striking example of what may be accomplished by private enterprise untrammelled by boards, routine, etc., is the property of Messrs Bingle, White and Co., of Newcastle and is situated about a mile and a half from the city in the direction of Tighes Hill. The land consists of about 325 acres held under mineral leases, and 67 freehold. It has a fine water frontage. The road from Newcastle through Wickham to the Waratah Smelting Works, intersects the block of freehold land. A private line of railway has been carried from the works on to the Waratah company line, so that the coal can be drawn either to the Waratah shoots and shipped there, or carried in the other direction along the Waratah Co line to the Great Northern Line and from thence to Bullock Island or to the Queens Wharf, Newcastle, as may be required. The Company have a private siding at the junction with the Great Northern Line with shunting accommodation for about forty wagons and other appliances. The colliery works in themselves are of the most massive description, and have been arranged according to the very latest improvements with three sets of screens and a large number of the necessary skips. The brick shaft is fifteen feet in diameter with double action, having room for two cages. At present the coal is brought to the surface by means of a powerful whim, with numerous relays of horses; but a steam engine (one of Robeys latest patent, 16 horse power) is in course of erection. Upwards of one hundred tons of coal have been brought in, which have been distributed to the different public departments for samples. At present five wagons only are in use but twenty more are in course of construction. The shaft is 50 feet deep with a workable seam of fourteen feet ten inches thick being the thickest in the district. Three trial shafts, thoroughly proving the ground, were sunk, the last having been sunk since October 1st and the whole of the works and necessary appliances have been put in perfect order since then.

Surname: Gas Lighting Newcastle (Industry)
First Name: -
Ship: LH
Date: 31 October 1921
Place: Newcastle
Source: The Newcastle Sun
Details: West Maitland was lighted with gas many years before Newcastle had that illumination. It was as far back as 1857, when Mr. John Tuck established the works in the old historic town, which at the time, and for many years afterwards, was a larger place than Newcastle. The first meeting convened to form a company In Newcastle to make gas, was held in the House Hotel, then one of the leading public-houses in the city. It stood on the spot where Scott s large establishment is erected, in Hunter-street. The date of that gathering, composed of prominent citizens, was December 1, 1865; Other meetings were held in the old courthouse, afterwards the post office). There the company had its birth, and was designated The City of Newcastle Gas and Coke Company. The company was floated with a capital of 10,000 pounds, in 5000 shares of 2 pounds each. Messrs. Alexander Brown, A. Rodgers, Harry Rouse, J. B. Winship, and W. H. Whyte were elected the first permanent directors. The First Gas Jet - A site for the erection of works was secured near Steel-street, at the west end of the city. There the plant was installed, and in a year and nine months after the company was formed the gas was turned on. The date was October 29, 1867 - 54 years ago last Saturday. Then kerosene lamps and sperm candles were discarded for gas in many homes. The streets however, were not lighted with gas until eight years later. The charge for gas to private consumers when the company began operations was at the rate of 14s 6d for 1000 feet. The old gas-holder is still standing on the original site; but in recent years the company acquired a large area in Newtown, Hamilton, where more ex tensive and up-to-date works have been established.

Surname: Goninans Engineering, Newcastle
First Name: -
Ship: LH
Date: -
Place: Wickham and Broadmeadow
Source: Sydney Mail 18 February 1925; Daily Commercial News 18 May 1921
Details: When Mr. Alfred Goninan took over the then small work shops at Wickham he lost no time in rebuilding and refitting the plant, devoting them to the construction of coal wagons, boiler-maker, and general engineering. The growing needs of the Newcastle and South Maitland districts with their large collieries and the rapid industrial expansion of Newcastle created an ever-increasing demand for the various kinds of machinery and plant manufactured by the firm. Business prospered and when the Newcastle Steel Works were established at Port Waratah, followed by other industries, together with the combined increased activity on the coalfields, it was found imperative to largely increase the size of the plant and the number of workmen employed. The old site at Wickham being restricted in area, a new plant was established on a larger and more suitable location at Broadmeadow, which also provided room for future extensions.. The area comprised about 40 acres of land; In 1921 - The first casting has been made at the new works of Messrs. A. Goninan & Company,. Limited, at Broadmeadow, Newcastle, and the event marked the most important anniversary in the history of the firm. It will be 22 years since Mr. A. Goninan started operations at Wickham, and there have since been gradual and important extensions, until the works there have been entirely rebuilt with massive shops and equipped with the most modern machinery and plant. The works have been erected on the site of the old English and Australian Copper Company stone smelters at Broadmeadow

Surname: Government Savings Bank, Newcastle
First Name: -
Ship: LH
Date: 30 January 1932
Place: 12 - 14 Bolton-street, Newcastle
Source: Newcastle Morning Herald
Details: Bolton-street Savings Bank Branch to Close A page of Newcastle banking history will be turned with the closing of the old Government Savings Bank of New South Wales in Bolton-street, on February 8. It has been decided to transfer the staff and the records to the branch of the Commonwealth Bank in Newcomen-street, where ample accommodation is available. No members of the staff will lose their employment as the result of the move. They will work in conjunction with the staff of the Newcomen-street branch. The present Manager of that branch (Mr. R. F. Pollard) will be in control. Mr. T. Allison, who has been in charge of the affairs of the Bolton-street bank during a particularly critical period of its history, will transfer to Sydney headquarters of the Commonwealth Bank, immediately adjustments necessitated by the changes are complete. Many changes have been made since the first savings bank to operate in the city of Newcastle opened its doors. It was a branch of the Savings Bank of New South Wales, a private institution. The work of its trustees extended beyond the sphere of the ordinary business meetings. One of the Newcastle trustees of the bank recalled yesterday that some of the trustees, himself included, attended the bank regularly on Friday nights to receive deposits. The old records still contain specimens of his signature in relation to the receipt of deposits. In 1871 the Government Savings Bank of New South Wales began operations in Newcastle Post-office. In 1908 it established a branch in Hunter-street, and the two rival savings banks competed until 1914, when the Government Savings Bank absorbed the Savings Bank of New South Wales. Now the Government Savings Bank has been absorbed by the Commonwealth Bank. Figures tell an interesting story of the growth of savings bank businesses consistent with the growth of the city. At the end of the first year s business, there were 23 accounts in the Savings Bank of New South Wales, and the amounts deposited totalled £783/17/8. Figures tabled in Parliament last year showed that, at June 30, the deposits in the Bolton-street branch of the Government Savings Bank totalled £1,510,9069. Records consulted yesterday revealed the remarkable fact that at least one man was still operating on an account which was opened in the old Savings Bank of New South Wales in 1870. One of the oldest depositors is Mr. Tim Griffiths, a well known Stockton identity

Surname: Hanlon (Newcastle Show)
First Name: John (Jack)
Ship: LH
Date: 24 February 1926
Place: Newcastle
Source: The Newcastle Sun
Details: One of the best known men connected with the Newcastle Show in the early days was Mr. John Hanlon, of Hanbury-street, Waratah. Until a couple of years ago Mr. Hanlon was ringmaster for the association, and while in that position, he was acquainted with stock exhibitors from all parts of the State. His long experience with stock, as a buyer and drover, and his expert horsemanship, fitted him for the position, and he was popular with the officials and the public. He takes a great interest still in the progress of the show, and can relate many interesting incidents of the great work done by the early organisers of the association. He has been a resident of Newcastle for about 50 years, and saw many changes during that time. He remembers when only one or two houses were erected in the Sandhills, now known as Newcastle East, and all the suburbs were a complete scrub. Although his home has been at Newcastle, his occupation as a buyer of stock has caused him to travel all over the State and into Queensland. He is popular with all saleyard visitors, and it is often said that the sale cannot start until Jack arrives. During his long term as a drover he has trucked and shipped cattle and horses to many places, and can relate many amusing and exciting experiences associated with the handling of stock by sailors on the steamers. Still in the saddle almost daily, he looks back with pride to more than 60 years ago when his father helped him to mount his first pony at Raymond Terrace.
