Details: On Friday 9th January, Major Edward Last of the 99th regiment, commanding the detachment stationed in Newcastle and in charge of the stockade, embarked on board the Rose steamer for Sydney, preparatory to his proceeding to New Zealand. As soon as a rumour of his departure had spread abroad, a letter was addressed, numerously signed by the inhabitants, to Sir Maurice O'Connell, Commander of the Forces, praying, that if it did not interfere with his Excellency's military arrangements, so efficient an officer might be retained where he had worked so much good, and where he had been so universally respected and beloved. On Thursday last the Loyal Union Lodge of Odd Fellows of the Manchester Unity, presented Major Last with an address upon his departure and on Friday last, prior to his embarkation, a deputation of the members of the Newcastle Mechanics' Institute, waited upon him in the Military Barracks, and an address from that body was read to him by the Rev. C. Pleydell N. Wilton, the President. To both of these addresses the gallant officer returned suitable answers. Upon embarking he was loudly cheered by the persons assembled

Details: A force of more than three hundred men, consisting of military, blue jackets, and civilians, under the command of Major Last, started off in pursuit, his Excellency Captain Grey accompanying the party. On Thursday afternoon the forces came up with Rangihaeata's scouts and a skirmish immediately ensued. The firing commenced at three oclock, and lasted till eight, when both parties suspended operations till morning. We regret to say that Lieut. Blackburn, of the 99th regiment and three men were killed and several wounded. Major Last had a narrow escape, a spent ball striking him on the forehead, and travelling round his cap. We are happy to say that he received no injury from it. The native who shot Lieut. Blackburn, was immediately shot by one of the Artillery, and two of the enemy who attempted to carry off the body, were likewise shot. The loss of the enemy is variously reported, one account making it five and the other eight killed and several wounded. The enemy were scattered in the bush in every direction and many of them were hidden in the branches of trees. Rangihaeata had thrown himself into a pah the existence of which, was not known. The rebel chief is supposed to have about two hundred and fifty followers with him in the pah. We are informed that Major Last and the whole force under his command, behaved in the most gallant and daring manner. The conduct of Major last was what we always expected, and it must be gratifying for him to know that the great bulk of the community do appreciate his gallant conduct.

Details: Our junior Major, Edward Last, was the antithesis of his senior. Genial, convivial, in him reigned all the social virtues. He had been married report said unhappily; late in life, hope triumphing over experience, he married again. But few were the years of his second marriage life. He passed away leaving a long record of good deeds. To the young officers he stood verily in loco parentis; many he saved by kindly counsel and more.
