Details: DEATH OF MRS. JOHN WOOD. ON Sunday afternoon about 4 pm there passed away, at Jesmond House, Newcastle, Mrs. John Wood, wife of Mr. John Wood (of Messrs. Wood Bros., of this city). The deceased lady s demise was not unexpected, as she had been suffering from that dread malady, cancer, for a considerable period ; and, albeit advice was sought from the most able medical men in the colonies, they were all unable to cope with the disease, although all that skill and loving hands could do was done for the alleviation of her sufferings. A change for the worse was observed on Friday last, and Mrs. Wood never recovered, expiring as before stated. The decease of Mrs. Wood recalls to mind many reminiscences in the history of Newcastle, as that lady was ever ready and willing, both with purse and personal effort, in the cause of true Christian charity to those in indigence ; whilst her kind and loving character will not soon be erased from the memories of those who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The deceased lady arrived in the colony from Scotland with her father, Mr. Robert Kirkaldy, who is now living in Newcastle, about 1859, the Wood family arriving here about the same period, and a couple of years later the marriage took place. The deceased was sister of Mr. Andrew Kirkaldy, of the Hunter River Hotel, and Mr. James Kirkaldy, Captain of Volunteer Artillery, and was also related by marriage to several of our most influential citizens. Messrs. Wood Bros. premises, the Hunter River Hotel, and other business premises in the town were closed yesterday out of respect to the deceased, whilst the flags of all the vessels in the harbour, and those of the mercantile community were at half-mast. The funeral takes place this afternoon. The cortege is announced to leave Jesmond House at 3 pm, for the Newcastle Railway Station, and thence to Sandgate by special train.
