Details: Methodism in Maitland. 103rd ANNIVERSARY. Methodism in Maitland has played no mean part in the development of the district. Its work was begun by that Irishman, Jeremiah Ledsom, who himself an ardent Methodist,- was firstly a Christian, and desired the spiritual good of his neighbours. The first service was held at the home of Mr. Ledsom, at the corner of High and Elgin. Streets, on November 17, 1837. From Sunday, November 26, 1837, services were held In the billiard room of the Albion Inn, situated at the rear of what was later Fossey s drapery store, in a lane leading off Church Street This building stood until 1930. Furniture, such as seats and reading desk, were made by Mr. Vincent C Williams, of Maitland. The first Sunday School, under the superintendency of Mr. V. G. Williams, also met in this building, the number of scholars ranging from 17 to 20. These early Methodists were very much in earnest, and it was not long before Messrs Ledsom, Williams, George Denshire and James Bicknell were hard at work purchasing land and collecting money to build a church, and the first chapel (as it was then called) was opened for divine worship on Thursday, October 15, 1840. So through the years, Methodists have carried their share of civic labour and responsibility, and present day Methodists have much to be proud of as they look back over the past history of their church.
