Details: DR. RICHARD READ, M.D., M.C.H., was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1849, educated at Queens University there, and spent two years at Trinity College. At fourteen years of age he came to Victoria, and spent five years acquiring experience on a station, then returned home, studied medicine, and in 1872 took the degrees of M.D., M.C.H., Queens University, Ireland, with L.M., Dublin. In 1872 Dr. Read came to Newcastle and became colleague of Dr. Knaggs for about four years. He then settled in Singleton and has since continued practice in that locality. He holds the appointment of Government medical officer and vaccinator for Patrick Plains, is president of the school-of-arts, and has taken a deep interest in all measures, having for their object the higher education of the community. Dr. Read has, by his pluck and energy, done much to develop the industrial resources of the district. In 1881 he, in conjunction with a few other shareholders, opened the Rixs Creek colliery, where coalmining has been carried on since with great success. On the property, which is now worked jointly by Dr. Read and the Messrs. Longworth, the gentlemen employ about sixty-five hands, and circulate about £500 per month. In connection with the works the company have erected coke ovens, and their coke received the highest award of merit given at the Adelaide exhibition. Dr. Reid is honorary surgeon to the Benevolent Asylum, and medical officer to the various friendly societies of the district. He is a married man, and is the father of five sons
