Details: Captain J. B. Meredith went to South Africa as medical officer in charge of the Bushmen s Contingent. He held the rank of lieutenant, but was promoted by General Baden Powell on the field to the rank of captain for distinguished conduct in attending the wounded under a heavy fire. Throughout the various engagements the doctor was found in the firing line, and obtained great praise for his skill and gallant conduct, A large number of people met him at Hexham railway station on his return, and escorted him with a cavalcade of vehicles and bands to Raymond Terrace, the route being decorated with bunting and floral designs and tho streets illuminated. A demonstration was held at night on the Reserve. Mr. R. A. Price, M.P., welcomed Captain Meredith on behalf of the residents,and presented him with an address, of welcome and a silver dinner service, suitably inscribed. The captain was entertained at a complimentary, dinner and fete, a large number of congratulatory speeches being made
