Details: Death by Drowning – It is our melancholy duty to inform the residents of the Upper Hunter of the sad death by drowning this afternoon, of Dr. Fox. At 3pm he was summoned to Muswellbrook to attend a patient which made it necessary for him to cross the Hunter at Denman. Unfortunately he preferred his own judgement to the directions of his guide and missed the ford b a few yards. The river at the place is barely three chains wide and a couple of saplings reach almost across it. After his first submergence he disengaged himself from the saddle, and clung to the saplings ; but from some unaccountable cause he suddenly relaxed his hold, and, to the agony of those on the bank who were striving to assist him, he sank, never to rise any more. This distressing accident is a heavy loss to the residents in and about Denman, who had lately been congratulating themselves on a person of Dr. Fox s talents and ability taking up his residence among them. The event has occurred too recently for us calmly to state the particulars of an affliction which has left us to mourn the loss of a dear and valued friend. 7pm - The darkness has set in, and all attempts to gain the body have proved unsuccessful.
