Details: Dr. R. W. Crooke, surgeon, has commenced the practice of his profession in rooms at Mr. C. Morley s drug store, Cessnock, and resides at Aberdare Hotel. Dr. Crooke was lately at West Wallsend for four months attending to the practise of Dr. Hocken (resident doctor absent on tour). On Dr. Hocken s return Dr. Crooke, who had made himself very popular with residents, was tendered a complimentary social and was presented with a gold cigar holder in silver case, suitable inscribed; and Mrs Crooke, who had equally endeared herself with the people) was presented by the ladies of West Wallsend with a silver mounted comb and brush also suitable inscribed. The presentation was made in the Federal Hall, West Wallsend in the presence of a large assemblage on March 13 last. During the speeches, the doctor and his good lady came in for much praise and general regret was expressed at the departure of two such useful residents from West Wallsend

Details: One of the first of the early doctors to come to Cessnock was Dr. Crooke. He was a very useful man to the community and is credited with being the first resident to bring a car to Cessnock. The doctor did thinkgs in up to date style when he drove up to patients homes in his bus and it was talked of quite a lot. Dr. Crooke was a member of the pioneer committee of the Cessnock Jockey Club. He assisted in the formation of the club and was also interested in all movements for the betterment of Cessnock

Details: One of the first moto vehicles to come to the coalfields was brought to Cessnock by Dr. R. W. Crooke. The vehicle was a motor buggy and it attracted much attention. It was a great source of news for the local paper in those far off days – about 30 years ago. It often reached its destination, but if the doc was late the waywardness of the motor vehicle served as an excuse, but mostly the excuse was legitimate. Mention of Dr. Crooke recalls that he disposed of his practice to the late Dr. Walker-Smith in 1910. At the same time two new medicos started business in Cessnock in Dr. Alfred Cooley and Dr. Godfrey. The last-mentioned doctor was also established at Kurri Kurri. Dr. Walter Fisher was then firmly established in Cessnock and had the largest practice of the medicos
